Update: Man dies after jumping into water at Devil’s Hole in Cedar Grove

An 18-year-old Newark man died Wednesday night after jumping into the water at Devil’s Hole in Cedar Grove, police Chief Richard Vanderstreet told the Times Thursday morning.
Police responded to a 9-1-1 report of a missing swimmer around 8:20 p.m. last night at Peckman River in the area of the Community Park known as Devil’s Hole, according to a release. A group of young adults and juveniles reported that their friend, Stephen Agyei, had not returned to the surface after jumping in, the report continued.
Officers Dominick Buscio, Jose Rodriguez and a host of members from the Cedar Grove Fire Department and rescue squad went in the water to search for the victim, but did not find him. It wasn’t until approximately 9:40 p.m. when the Lyndhurst Fire Department Dive Team showed up at the scene and found Agyei 15-feet below the surface, Vanderstreet said.
After attempting to revive him, Agyei was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson and pronounced dead approximately two hours after the report was made, at 10:36 p.m., the release stated.
“This is unfortunate. To my knowledge, there’s never been an incident such as this before,” Vanderstreet said.
While Devil’s Hole is open to the public, Vanderstreet said, “it is not appropriate or approved for swimming. So [swimming there] would be an unsanctioned event.”
The police department is conducting a follow-up investigation.
